RATIONALE
The Canopy Table takes inspiration from the contrasting textures and colours found throughout nature, while celebrating oak wood in which the table was constructed. Incorporating and highlighting the end grain of the wood was a major goal throughout the design process of the piece; this goal resulted in a unique tabletop showcasing the construction of each leg, with the end grain of the asymmetrical legs highlighted. The legs of the table are oriented unevenly to further the canopy tables contrasting elements while emphasizing the irregularities found in nature. Furthermore, three substantial legs are paired with a contrasting thin tabletop; this design element takes inspiration from the San Francisco-based design studio Medium Small’s Colossal collection. Their use of visually heavy components paired with thin elements created a great point of contrast, which was drawn upon in the Canopy Table. Lastly, the finish was completed by experimenting with green dye to pull out the unique grain patterns and end grain of the oak wood. This finish again emphasizes the table's connection to nature, with the canopy table standing as a celebration of the colours and textures found throughout.
