RATIONALE
The Amaralo table is an inspired piece that draws visual cues from renowned Brazilian midcentury designers. It uses negative space to create the illusion of a large solid object while providing ample storage within its interior.
Sergio Rodrigues, a famous midcentury Brazilian designer, was a toy maker who deeply valued the concept of display culture in his furniture and toy-making. The inset beneath the glass tabletop allows for displaying significant objects while maintaining ease of access and a clear surface. The choice of cherry wood pays homage to the warm tones prevalent in the 1960s and 70s. Today, materials like Teak and Frejo wood are less accessible and often expensive. However, the combination of using a more readily available material that still exudes warmth and colour, a simple and repeatable mass manufacturing technique for producing panels, and utilizing negative space to maximize the table’s scale results in an affordable production cost. The artisanal touch of the custom hand-cut glass top pads furthers the handcrafted feel to the product, contrasting its strict, rigid form with playful and uniquely shaped supports. This honours the playful nature of Rodrigues and the stark contrast between organic and structural elements seen throughout Brazilian midcentury design.
